Hampton Roads and Virginia Beach Area History

For those of you who would like a little more information about Hampton Roads and Virginia Beach, here is a little history about our magnificent areas. Hampton Roads is not only a body of water but a piece of land in Southeastern Virginia. Virginia Beach was known as Tidewater, Virginia. Hampton Roads history dates back to 1607, the term "Hampton Roads" is a centuries old reference that originated back when the region was struggling. This is where the ship building industry boomed, and the British Navy and merchant ships from around the world soon came, making the Hampton Roads area a center of trade, transportation and military activity.
Hampton Roads and Virginia Beach are the world's largest naval bases, since it is a natural tidal basin which is formed by the confluences of James and Elizabeth Rivers. You can not live in Hampton Roads without being a short distance from a naval installation. The Hampton Roads area is composed of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Newport News, Hampton, Virginia Beach, Isle of Wight and Yorktown. |
