The city of Chesapeake lies in Norfolk County in the South Hampton Roads region of southeast Virginia. It is an independent city created in 1963 with a population of 214,725 (2004 U.S. Census Bureau estimate). Although created recently, Chesapeakes history has roots that date back to colonial Virginia. The rule of the British Crown ended officially on January 1, 1776 after the complete defeat of the British by "rebels" (Americans) on December 9, 1775 at the Battle of Great Bridge. In terms of land (353 square miles), it is one of the largest cities in Virginia and a large portion of the Great Dismal Swamp stretches into Chesapeake. |

Chesapeake is an excellent blend of country/coastal living with great metropolitan amenities. It is great for relaxing and enjoying the sounds of nature as well as shopping, restaurants, theaters and clubs. Moreover, with endless natural waterways, the city seems tailor-made for boating and other water sports. |
