Portsmouth is located on the banks of the Elizabeth River directly across from the city of Norfolk in the U.S. Commonwealth of Virginia.  As of a 2005 census estimate there were 100,169 residents living in this beautiful and historic port city.  The city is home to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, one of the oldest working naval facilities on the east coast.
Many of the most notable attractions in Portsmouth are grouped within walking distance of each other in Olde Towne.  This bustling neighborhood offers fine restaurants, antique shops, upscale retail shops and an impressive collection of historic homes, all in a scenic waterfront setting.  There are seven shopping centers in Portsmouth: Plaza Shopping Center, Kings Plaza Shopping Center, Westgate Plaza Shopping Center, Midcity Shopping Center, Town and Country Shopping Center, Tower Mall Shopping Center and Church land Shopping Center.
Many residents and visitors take the short ride on the Elizabeth River Ferry over to neighboring Norfolk for the day or night.  Some prefer engaging in one of the numerous sports or recreational activities available here.  Portsmouth offers everything from fly-fishing and river rafting on one of eleven rivers and creeks to enjoying a relaxing picnic in one of the nine parks nearby.  If you are a beach lover, Virginia Beach is only a twenty-minute drive away.
