Newport News, Virginia is located on the southeastern end of the Virginia Peninsula on the north shore of the James River.  It is an independent city with an estimated population of 195,347 as of 2005.  It is one of the larger cities in Virginia and home to the Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard.
Newport News is rich in history.  The original downtown area is purported to be the longest continuously named place in the United States.  Several important civil war battle sites near Lee Hall and plantations along the roads going into Yorktown and Williamsburg are protected due to their historic significance.
Newport News is a major metropolitan hub in the Hampton roads region.  Today, the city is undergoing an extensive urbanization process, which includes master planned golf communities, pedestrian oriented communities and centralized business districts.
