Isle Of WightCounty is located on the shores of the James River in the Hampton Roads area of eastern Virginia.It is one of the original eight shires or counties established in 1634 and one of the oldest counties in the United States.Isle of Wight is also the name of the countys seat.This scenic county so full of history has a population of 29,728 (U.S. Census Bureau).
English colonists settled in what is today, Isle of WightCounty in 1634.Originally known as Warrosquyoake Shire it was renamed Isle of WightCounty in 1637.Some say the name change was due to the difficulty in pronouncing the Indian word Warrosquyoake.Isle of Wight has maintained its rural and scenic beauty through the years and has some spectacular examples of early colonial and other architectural styles not easily found in other parts of the country.
Due to its strong economy, Isle of Wight has been attracting more businesses and more families.2004 census estimates place its population at 32,774, a 10.25% increase since the 2000 census.However, this spurt in population and industry has not overshadowed the important historical tradition of this county or the small town charm, which awaits new residents and visitors alike.
